Skill Training Programs Information

The Kansas City Area Technical School offers over 20 technical skill training programs during the daytime which lead to certificates and employment skills in the areas of office and computer technology, service and health occupations, and trade and industrial fields.

ATS is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and operates in cooperation with the Kansas Board of Regents, the Kansas State Department of Education, and the Kansas State Boards of Nursing and Cosmetology.

College graduates . . . homemakers . . . dislocated workers . . . high school seniors . . . those no longer in high school . . . anyone wanting better employment potential . . . all receive the quality, hands-on education employers want.

The ATS curriculum is individualized so students master program competencies at their own pace. Advanced students may participate in cooperative work experiences or internships. Leadership skills are developed through national student organizations.

Program completers may also receive college credit. Graduation ceremonies are held quarterly.

Postsecondary enrollment is available to US citizens and eligible noncitizens possessing a high school diploma or GED certificate, or a US citizen or eligible noncitizen who is 18 or older and no longer enrolled in high school. (Those who do not have a GED or high school diploma must take the Work Keys assessment test to be eligible for admission.)

High school seniors dual enroll through the parent high school the spring of their junior year.

Tuition for postsecondary students is set annually by USD 500 and the state. High school students attend ATS at no cost to the individual other than supplies such as uniforms required for certain programs. Tuition for high school students is paid by the parent school district.

Class Schedule

Postsecondary programs meet Monday - Friday, from 7:30 am to 2:15 pm (except Cosmetology which meets 7:30 am to 3 pm). Full-time students with good attendance can complete 720-hour programs in approximately 6 months, the 880-hour Early Childhood Education program in approximately 7.5 months, the 1080-hour Welding program in approximately 9 months and the 1290-hour programs in approximately 11 months. The 1500-hour Cosmetology program may also be completed in approximately 11 months.

Half-time schedules may be arranged in some programs from 7:30 - 10:40 am or 11:20 am - 2:15 pm. (Students selecting this option will take twice as long to complete the program requirements.) Short-term or customized schedules may also be arranged in many programs to fit individual needs.

Postsecondary students may start ATS programs (except Cosmetology and Practical Nursing) the first Monday of most months, on a space available basis. Practical Nursing and Cosmetology start new students four times a year, and there is usually a waiting list.

The high school schedule corresponds with the 9-month regular USD 500 school calendar. High school seniors dual enroll at ATS for 4, 5 or 6-credit blocks, and also attending their parent high school the remainder of the day.

Student Services

The ATS Child Care Center is open each school day to serve the children of current ATS students at a reasonable cost (ages 2 weeks to 5 years - on a space available basis). Contact the ATS Child Care Center for information.

Counseling and Placement Services are available to assist students in their educational programs and personal concerns, as well as finding part-time employment while in school or full-time placement at graduation.

An Instructional Support Staff provides supplementary activities for those needing help in reading, math, study and job skills. In accordance with state and federal regulations, ATS programs include computer literacy, study skills, applied math, communications, job readiness and leadership units.

Students who must extend enrollment due to excessive absences pay additional tuition. Short-term customized enrollment covering specific units in most programs can be arranged, and tuition is pro-rated accordingly.

Tuition rates are subject to change on July 1 of each year. Books, tools and uniforms (if required) are additional and vary by program. Contact the Admissions Office for details.

High school tuition ($10.65 per clock hour) is paid by the parent school district. Tuition is pro-rated ($1.60 per hour) for former high school students who continue their ATS enrollment with advanced standing as Kansas postsecondary students in order to complete the program.
